If you are an immigrant and wish to bring a family member into the United States, you need to file for a family visa. The process is relatively straightforward, but there are some things you need to know.

This article explains a few steps you need to follow to apply for a family visa. Continue reading to learn more.

File a petition

Your first step should be to file Form I-130, a Petition for an Alien relative. The Department of Homeland Security and USCIS reviews the application. Visit the USCIS website to learn more.

Establish your residence in the US

To file for a family visa in the US, you must maintain a principal residence in the United States. If you have become a US citizen since filing a petition, you need to upgrade your petition to an immediate relative.

Pay the fees

You need to pay fees for filing the petition, processing the application, medical and vaccination costs, translations, documents such as passports or police certificates and travel expenses. Be prepared for unforeseen fees every step of the way.

Prepare your documents

You can expect to supply a passport that is valid six months past the intended entry date, an affidavit of support for the emigree, Form DS-260, two passport-sized photographs, a completed medical exam form and other civil documents.

Conduct the interview

Once you file the valid documents, you must schedule a visa interview. The applicant should bring their passport with them to the discussion.

Filing for a family visa is a long process. Consult with an attorney to help facilitate the application and gather the relevant documents.
